“Filmington”, Hollywood is all around you…
The Wilmington area has now rightfully earned the nickname “Hollywood East.” Take a look at this list of movies and TV shows filmed within minutes of Wilmington’s waterfront community, TidalWalk.
The reasons are simple – North Carolina’s unique tax credits to incentivize the film industry (at least until January 2015), beautiful waterfront locations (like TidalWalk) and ScreenGems, one of the biggest studios/sound stages on the planet.
And here’s something new… for the first time in North Carolina history, FOUR films shot in Wilmington hit number one at the Box Office in the same year (2013) : Iron Man 3, The Conjuring, Safe Haven, and We’re the Millers. In case you were wondering, here are some of the places they shot these movies, and how close they are to TidalWalk – odds are you’ve driven by them plenty of times and didn’t realize they were part of four movies, which, at this point, have grossed $1.9 Billion in ticket sales worldwide.
The Conjuring : Carolina Apartments
Distance : 6 miles from TidalWalk
Plenty of spooky stuff happened inside this old building on Market Street. But don’t worry; it was all acting and corn syrup in this Exorcist-style horror film.
We’re the Millers : 420 Market Street, Downtown Wilmington
Distance from TidalWalk – 6 miles
Another one of those charming old buildings downtown that Hollwood suddenly can’t get enough of..Whatever happened in there must’ve been pretty funny – “We’re the Millers” grossed a quarter billion worldwide.
Iron Man 3 Final Scene : Port of Wilmington, 1 Shipyard Blvd, Wilmington, N.C.
Distance : 9 Miles from TidalWalk
Funny story (or not funny if you live near there) – the production company for IM3 sent a letter to anyone who lived or worked near the shipyard warning of “extremely loud explosions for several hours in the middle of the night.” I mean, I guess if you tell them about it, it’s OK? You couldn’t hear any of that in TidalWalk but it’s an easy drive if you want to see where Tony Stark finally bested Alldritch Killian.
Cape Fear River: Iron Man 3 Air Force One stunt
Distance from TidalWalk – less than a mile…
You could’ve almost seen if from our dock if you squinted hard enough – Iron Man (or at least a remote controlled Iron Man) rescuing about a dozen people from a disintegrated jet.
This scene had people on the River rubbernecking all weekend.. a news crew caught some of it
And here’s what the finished product looked like :
This is just scratching the surface – some of television’s highest budget series are also shooting in Wilmington – “Under the Dome”, a Stephen King project, “Eastbound and Down” on HBO – and FOX’s new hit “Sleepy Hollow” is filming as we speak.
